The snuff salesman, Alois Poschl, was 29 years of age when he decided to set up his own business. It was his vision to put the knowledge and expertise he had gained on the subject of snuff to the test, and to do so at his own expense. So on 24.12.1902 he founded the company “Alois Poschl Tabakfabriken” in Landshut.
Landshut was a favourable location for two reasons: the water of the River Isar could drive the tobacco mills and – more important still – Landshut lies in the centre of the major snuff region: Lower Bavaria.
During the first few years the young, forward-looking company grew constantly. Soon the water-powered mills were replaced by more modern diesel engines. The breakthrough finally came with the “DOPPELAROMA” brand of snuff.
In 1935 the company founder's two sons, Alois and Wilhelm, entered the business and placed their main emphasis on sales – with great success, and the company grew larger and larger. Expanding their range of products to include cigarettes and pipe tobacco in 1949 contributed to this development. Then in the 1970s the two brothers scored a real hit: they invented “GLETSCHERPRISE”. A snuff which was especially mild and pleasant and which soon attracted a big following in the market.
The Poschl pipe tobacco series EXCLUSIV and RADFORD'S, as well as other pipe tobacco specialities (Brookfield, Golden Blend's etc.), also developed favourably. The proverbial quality and consistent customer orientation was rewarded with what is today a 17% market share in pipe tobacco in Germany. Furthermore, every free edition of Radford’s Magazin, one of the biggest magazines for pipe smokers, reaches about 100,000 connoisseurs across the country.
BROOKFIELD, Germany's best-selling cigarette tobacco for hand-rolled filter cigarettes, crowns the fine-cut range along with the Pöschl brands of PONTIAC, RED BULL and Turner, among others.
The factory's success was not without its consequences: the business premises were soon bursting at the seams, and so in 1995 they made the biggest investment in the history of the company to date: purchasing an approx. 50,000 m2 site, they constructed a new administration and production building, thus laying the foundation for further, long-term growth.
Since 1992, Pöschl has also been expanding internationally. Foreign branches have been established in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Hong Kong and France. Pöschl also has holdings in tobacco distribution companies throughout the world. Today, Pöschl tobacco is on sale in more than 60 countries – in addition to Pöschl becoming the world's biggest producer of snuff. The company holds more than 50% of the market in snuff worldwide and over 90% of the market for comparable snuff products in Germany.
Despite this great success, the company with a tradition to uphold has continued to adhere to its principles. For the sake of customer satisfaction, every one of the 300 employees undergoes intensive quality management training. In 1995 Pöschl became the first and only snuff and tobacco manufacturers in the world to impose strict quality criteria in their production plant.
All the efforts we make serve to provide the best possible quality, in terms of both produce and service – or, echoing the motto of founding father Alois Poschl from the year 1902: “Quality is when the customer returns and not the goods”.
The Poschl group of companies is still entirely a family concern, as it has been now for 100 years.
